During the 12th century, at the time of Moorish rule in Sicily, a young woman in Palermo devoted her days to caring for her plants. One fateful day, a Moor passing by was captivated by her beauty and boldly declared his love.
At first, she fell for his charm, but soon after, she learned of his family in the East. Heartbroken and overcome with jealousy, she took his life and turned his head into a planter for her basil. Over time, her flourishing plant drew admiration from her neighbors, eventually inspiring the iconic “Testa di Moro” vases, which are still used across Sicily today.
